Flow Instrumentation Solution for the Food and Beverage Industry

Flow Instrumentation Solution for the Food and Beverage Industry

Application Overview

Food and beverage production spans core stages such as water treatment, pre-treatment, blending, filling and packaging, CIP cleaning, and energy management, and covers mainstream edible liquids including liquid dairy, beer, carbonated soft drinks, juice and tea drinks, bottled water, Chinese spirits, plant protein beverages, functional beverages, wine, coffee beverages, and condiments. Requirements on flow instrumentation differ sharply from stage to stage, and the industry's pain points come down to two. First, the product is consumed directly, so hygiene compliance is non-negotiable: wetted parts must be 316L stainless steel, meet 3-A Sanitary Standards, and withstand repeated high-temperature acid and alkali CIP/SIP cycles. Second, measurement accuracy directly affects product consistency and cost: a deviation in batching ratio changes taste and concentration, while a deviation in fill volume leads to underfill complaints or product loss.

Application Focus

By process stage and media type, the measurement challenges and requirements are as follows:

1. Raw material handling (water treatment): RO pre-treatment, RO permeate, and corrosive water-treatment duties call for selectable liners, electrodes, and wetted materials; small-flow water measurement calls for multiple structures and materials with a cost advantage.

2. Production (high-temperature sterilization, blending): flow monitoring in steam sterilization systems must withstand up to 350 °C; blender ratio control requires high precision, accuracy class 0.5 or better; CO₂ measurement must be economical and reliable; syrup media involve both corrosive attack and viscosity fluctuation.

3. Non-conductive media (syrup, alcohol, coconut milk, edible oil, flavorings, cooking wine): electromagnetic flowmeters cannot operate here, and a Coriolis mass flowmeter is essential — a common challenge across the industry.

4. Aerated media (beer, carbonated soft drinks, fermenting grape juice): entrained gas causes severe reading fluctuation, so a Coriolis mass flowmeter with entrained-gas handling is required; standard electromagnetic or turbine flowmeters are unsuitable.

5. High-viscosity and solids-laden media (honey, jam, concentrated coffee liquid, soy milk, grape juice): prone to blocking the flow path, these call for a straight-tube Coriolis mass flowmeter or an electromagnetic flowmeter.

6. Corrosive media (vinegar at pH 2~3, soy sauce containing chloride ions, SO₂ solution, VC solution): electrodes and liners must be matched to the medium — tantalum or Hastelloy C276 electrodes with PTFE/PFA liners; standard 316L electrodes do not apply.

7. Filling and packaging: quantitative filling of beverages and alcoholic drinks requires accuracy class 0.2 or better; beverage filling must handle solid-liquid two-phase media with a fast response.

8. CIP cleaning: weak acid and alkali solutions circulate at high velocity, requiring real-time flow feedback to evaluate cleaning effectiveness.

9. Energy management: steam metering must automatically compensate for density changes and link to the energy management platform; refrigerant meters must offer long service life; site water use must support wireless remote transmission.

Solution Overview

1. Selection by Media Characteristics

Instrument selection in this industry starts with identifying the medium, then choosing the meter type:

(1)Conductive liquids (milk, juice, water, CIP fluids, brine): first choice is the MF-series hygienic electromagnetic flowmeter (MFS), with no obstruction or scaling inside the pipe, tolerance of repeated CIP/SIP, and an economical price.

(2)Non-conductive or high-precision media (syrup, alcohol, flavorings, coconut milk, edible oil): first choice is the MFM-series Coriolis mass flowmeter, which measures mass flow directly, independent of conductivity, and outputs density and temperature for deriving concentration, Brix, and alcohol content.

(3)Aerated media (beer, carbonated soft drinks, fermenting grape juice): first choice is the MFM Coriolis mass flowmeter with entrained-gas handling, keeping a stable output under gassy conditions.

(4)High-viscosity media (honey, jam, concentrated coffee liquid, oils and fats): first choice is the straight-tube MFM Coriolis mass flowmeter — the measuring tube is straight, with no liquid-trapping dead corners, and resists clogging.

(5)Solids-laden media (soy milk, grape juice): choose the wear-resistant MF electromagnetic flowmeter with a PFA wear-resistant liner and Hastelloy C276 electrodes; where higher accuracy is required, choose the straight-tube Coriolis.

(6)Corrosive media (vinegar, soy sauce, chloride-containing brine, SO₂, VC solution): choose the corrosion-resistant MF electromagnetic flowmeter, with electrodes and liner selected from tantalum, Hastelloy C276, and 316L according to the medium.

(7)Gas and steam (CO₂, steam, compressed air): first choice is the VFE vortex flowmeter with integrated temperature and pressure compensation, which automatically compensates for density and temperature/pressure changes in steam and gas.

(8)Large-diameter raw water and pipeline water (DN300 and above): first choice is the SFC ultrasonic flowmeter — non-contact, no pipe cutting, no production shutdown for retrofit; the MFP insertion-type electromagnetic flowmeter is an alternative.

2. Raw Material Handling (Water Treatment)

RO pre-treatment, RO permeate, and corrosive water-treatment duties use electromagnetic, vortex, and turbine flowmeters respectively, with configurable liners, electrodes, and wetted materials, and with insensitivity to media viscosity. Small-flow water duties use the RFC-series metal-tube variable area flowmeter, available in multiple structures and materials with local indication and remote transmission, convenient for routine inspection of small water-treatment skids.

3. Production (High-Temperature Sterilization, Blending)

Steam sterilization flow monitoring uses the VFT vortex flowmeter, rated to 350 °C, flange-mounted and vibration-resistant, holding a stable reading even when the line vibrates noticeably during sterilization. For precise ratio control on blenders and for dosing non-conductive media such as syrup, coconut milk, and juice, Coriolis mass flowmeters (including the hygienic micro-bend design) are used at accuracy class 0.1~0.2, with simultaneous density and temperature output that keeps Brix, concentration, and ratio accuracy immune to temperature-driven viscosity change. CO₂ measurement can use the VFT vortex flowmeter to control cost, upgrading to a Coriolis solution where higher injection accuracy is required.

4. Filling and Packaging

For quantitative filling of alcoholic drinks and beverages, high-precision filling uses the hygienic MFM Coriolis mass flowmeter at accuracy class 0.2, while beverage filling uses the MFS miniature hygienic electromagnetic flowmeter, suited to solid-liquid two-phase media with a fast response. Underfilling leaves packages short of the declared volume and overfilling wastes product — both directly erode gross margin, and with its hygienic micro-bend design the Coriolis solution still outputs density and temperature simultaneously for real-time verification of recipe concentration.

5. CIP Cleaning

The MF-series electromagnetic flowmeter is used, fitted with Hastelloy electrodes to resist aggressive media, with a built-in pulse output for PLC-linked control of cleaning duration and self-diagnostic alarms for empty pipe, excitation, and over-limit faults. Traditional CIP relies on time and operator experience: over-cleaning wastes steam and cleaning agents, while under-cleaning brings microbiological risk. Feeding flow data into cleaning-duration control and effectiveness assessment makes every cleaning cycle evidence-based.

6. Energy Management

Steam and compressed air metering use the VFT vortex flowmeter, which automatically compensates for steam density changes and feeds data to the energy management platform; refrigerant metering uses the TFC-series turbine flowmeter, whose duplex stainless steel wetted parts give long service life; site water accounting uses electromagnetic water meters with wireless remote transmission, delivering data straight to the central control room and simplifying on-site retrofit.

Customer Value

1. Compliance and Food Safety Assurance

The full hygienic instrument range is designed to 3-A Sanitary Standards, with 316L stainless steel wetted parts and an optional mirror-polished finish, tolerant of repeated high-temperature acid and alkali CIP/SIP and free of hygiene dead zones. This mitigates microbiological contamination risk at the hardware level, simplifies food-safety audits and third-party certification, and reduces the business loss caused by product recalls and food safety incidents.

2. Stable Product Quality, Fewer Batch Variations

High-precision mass flow and electromagnetic measurement enable precise control of batching ratio, Brix, alcohol content, and fill volume. Because mass flow is measured directly, viscosity fluctuation, entrained gas, and solids no longer introduce measurement deviations, keeping taste and concentration consistent from batch to batch, reducing rejects, and protecting brand reputation.

3. Lower Cost, Controlled Material Loss

Precise filling measurement avoids underfill complaints and the raw-material waste of overfilling. CIP cleaning moves from fixed-time control to flow-linked control, reducing over-consumption of cleaning agents, steam, and water. Fine-grained metering of utility media (steam, compressed air, water) supports energy accounting and consumption optimization, steadily lowering production and operating costs.

4. One Platform for Complex Conditions, Lower O&M Burden

A standardized selection matrix covers the industry's wide range of media (conductive/non-conductive, high-viscosity, aerated, solids-laden, highly corrosive), spanning water treatment, blending, filling, CIP, and utility energy metering on one platform. The instruments resist clogging, wear, and vibration and support self-diagnostics, reducing on-site shutdowns and maintenance and keeping production lines running continuously.
